Who is my School Counselor?
Students are assigned a School Counselor based on the student’s last name. Occassionally, fluctuating enrollment and/or staff changes necessitate changes to a student’s counselor assignment. Current assignments are available on the Guidance Staff page.
How do I request a meeting with a School Counselor?
Students are welcome to stop by the Counseling Office to see a counselor. No appointments are needed.
Please keep in mind that school counselors wear many hats and are often called out of the office for classroom guidance, testing, and school/system-wide meetings.If your counselor is not available and you or someone you are concerned about is NOT FACING A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY then please schedule a meeting with your counselor by filling out an appointment card. In case of a life threatening emergency, please tell the Front Desk that you need to someone immediately.
Parents, if you need to meet with your child’s counselor, please contact them directly to make an appointment. Email is the fastest way of contact.
How do I request a meeting with my child’s teachers?
If a parent has a concern with a specific course, they are encouraged to contact the teacher directly. If concerns cross multiple classes, parents should contact the designated counselor to schedule a parent-teacher conference. Parent-Teacher conferences are held before school in most cases.
ACADEMIC
What should a student do who is struggling in a class?
Students should first see their teacher. Teachers are typically available during school or after school to assist with help sessions. It is best to schedule an appointment with the teacher to ensure availability. PAWS Support may be available. National Honor Society has Peer Tutors who can help along with Math Honor Society Peer Helpers.
How can parents or guardians monitor student progress in high school?
Parents/guardians should register for the Home Access Center (HAC) for up-to-date information regarding assignments, grades, attendance, discipline, and more.
First time Home Access Center users: You can pick up your login and password at a school where you have a child in attendance. If you have multiple children in Fulton County Schools you may go to any of your children’s schools. You will be required to show a photo ID to receive this information. The school can combine all of your students into a single login.
Prior Home Access Center users: The login and password you received last year is still active as long as you have at least one child enrolled in Fulton County Schools.
How many credits is each course worth?
Each semester-long course is worth .5 credits. For example, first semester of Biology is worth .5 credits. The full-year (or 2 semesters) of Biology is worth 1.0 credit.
How many credits are needed to graduate?
23 credits are required for graduation. (4 English; 4 Math; 4 Science; 3 Social Studies; 1 PE/Health; 3 World Language/Fine Art/Career Technology; 4 Electives) In addition, students must satisfy state testing requirements. What is considered a passing grade in Fulton County?
A 70% is the minimum passing grade for a course.
If a student fails a class, what are his/her options for credit recovery?
Summer school, online courses, GAVS Credit recovery
If a student fails first semester of a core class, but then passes second semester, does the student have to make up the first semester?
Yes. Each semester is a separate grade on the transcript.
How many credits does a student need to be promoted to the next grade level?
5 credits = Grade 10; 11 credits = Grade 11; 17 credits = Grade 12
How is academic eligibility determined?
In order to be eligible for GHSA sports, students must have passed 5 out of 6 courses in the previous semester. In addition, students must be on track to graduate (not retained in a lower grade).
ONLINE COURSES & SUMMER SCHOOL
How can a student sign up for an online class?

How can a student sign up for summer school?
Summer school information is typically available from the county office in mid-April following Spring Break. Summer school typically begins in early June. Students must receive approval from their counselor regarding their summer school course selection.
How can a student sign up for PLATO/GAVS Credit Recovery?
Registration for GAVS Credit Recovery will begin at the start of the semester. Students register for the program with the Graduation Coach.
MISCELLANEOUS
How can a parent request a letter to verify a student’s enrollment in school for insurance and/or other purposes?
Attendance verification letters can be requested from Mrs. Speer at the counseling office front desk. Please allow 24 hours prior to pick-up.
How can I request a transcript for college, NCAA or scholarship purposes?
Students need to create an account on http://www.parchment.com and get parent permission in order to request transcripts electronically. Transcript for fall admission will be available/released after Labor Day. Paper transcripts are available for a cost of $3 which includes postage and envelope. Please visit the Counseling Front Desk to request a paper transcript.
